One might not think that a VPN (Virtual Private Network) is that important or they hear the term and think it has something to do with downloading illegal material (videos, music, games, software) or being able to watch a sporting event that is in a blackout restriction. A VPN is so much more then that, I am currently using a VPN for this post even though I am over 2000 miles away from my home in North Carolina, I am currently connected as if I am on my own home network. The reason this is so important is that I am in California on a public Wi-Fi, all my data is being tunneled as if I am on my home network in North Carolina. This is important because when you are on public Wi-Fi it is less secure and whatever you are doing can be monitored by whoever is giving you access to the free Wi-Fi or someone else that is also accessing that free wi-fi network . When using a VPN this secures that information, however keep in mind that whatever network you are using as a VPN ( in this case my home network that is through AT&T Fiber) is collecting the information. It is always best to look at it as the lesser of two evils. In my current situation I see it safer and more secure to tunnel through my own Virtual Private Network (in NC) then to use the open network in CA at the resort that is monitored by the resort and whoever may be smart enough to pull data from the open network.
